Gridserver at Media Temple

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

Lately i have been looking for a new host, that would give me more flexibility and performance in order to experiment with web applications. My first project is to evolve accidentdesigns.com which i moved to the gridserver from my old host.

Currently my idea is to make Accident Designs more of a personal brand covering what i am. Instead of the corporate Second Life focus its has now. My main expertise will still be Second Life, ad least for a while until i get better at something else.

With the website i am experimenting with freemind as the structure of the site. Through a flashviewer my vision is to merge it with a cms and create a simple site build around the mindmap including a blog. This blogger blog or perhaps directly hosted within the cms. This is my thoughts right now but i don’t seem near a solution yet so the old site will still be available at accidentdesigns.com/old

If you have feedback on the new site, i would love to hear from you!

SEO in Second Life

Monday, November 19th, 2007

With new and very much improved search in Second Life, SEO will get a whole new meaning within this virtual world. Now objects on parcels can be listed with title description and even price if set for sale. This will also redefine commerce. Now networked web integrated vendor systems as apez and onrez systems are widely popular. But none of the objects sold through theese systems will be indexed by the search engine. Perhaps the such services can span Search Engine Optimizing through rezzing example objects for sale from the inventory.server used on grid.

The new search really ads some possibilities to get yourself indexed in varius ways and it ads a new meaning to the way content is managed in Second Life. Suddenly it matters what you name each prim in a project you want indexed.

Search also creates some prim specific issues since for each prim oriented entry you would need to rez it, and keep it rezzed. Perhaps there would be future possibilities to SEO without the need to use unwanted prims.

The new search is definetly a huge improvement and i am looking forward to have SEO in SL as a point of focus in my next project.

Building Lab and SL

Friday, November 9th, 2007

I recently gave a lecture on Second Life at Building Lab DK. They have been involved in U_Build, a project that unites the construction and the game industry and utilizes user-driven innovation and dialog. Among the collaborators are Mutopia and IO interactive. IO has technology that would be able to support an interactive platform. Technology that is mature in relation to the technology supporting Second Life. However Second Life is still very relevant for the project, especially if you see it in a perspective where technology is allowed to improve. Second Life has an already established user-community and the grid enables interconnected collaboration and almost unlimited technical possibilities. So even though the technology isn’t mature, the grid already has its advantages.

Which has very good intentions on how to use Second Life and its community, they don’t fully succeed though because they do not have something to offer the users in return. Therefore the users do not get involved in the project. To look at a case of an ongoing successful presence in SL that manages to build an active user community we investigated Pontiac. Motorati as Pontiac’s presence in SL is named relies on mainly competitions and customization. Users can customize there own vehicles and compete in races organized by Motorati which is of value for Pontiac in the ideas and user involvement they achieve but also just as general marketing.Adlast we looked into how Keystone Buchard and some of the projects he is involved in mannages to use SL. He is a pioneer in using SL in his field which is very relevant for Building Lab DK.
